Article improvement - minimum - WP:V and WP:NOR - suggested next step

  • progress has been made on ranking for importance and the table at Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team/Demographics of Australia articles by quality statistics shows 74 articles ranked - none assessed for quality higher than B at present. (The quality scale is at Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/Assessment#Quality scale ) Of the articles currently assessed as being of top importance to this project, 3 articles are assessed as being of B class, 9 are assessed as start class and 3 as stub. Some of the quality assessments are not consistent and/or need to be revisited. However I think what is clear is that all these articles are candidates for improvement. My suggested next step is reviewing assertions made and checking that they are referenced would be a great start; if not referenced tag with {{fact}} or find the reference. I am concerned that top class articles meet the wikipedia core policies of WP:V and WP:NOR and I suspect that this may not be the case --Matilda talk 01:47, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

New Articles - Residency is neither necessary nor sufficient to be Australian

It is great to see how busy Matilda had been .. Apologies for not being able to make an equally productive contribution to date!

I see three new 'stub' articles created. Great! I note, with concern, however that Booian Australians are being defined as those residents of Australia who have Booian ancestors (alla of Booian descent

Please, please might we simply agree (as demographically and/ior statistically inconvenient as it may be) .. that people DO NOT become Australian simply by living here (ie by being residents of Australia)!!.

To be classed as an Australian, one MUST be a citizen of Australia, not just a resident .. irrespective of one's ancestory. Residency is neither a necessary nor a sufficient condition to being Australian ..

As previously discussed, back in 1991, approx 40% of residents born in Booian, were just plain Booians and could not be properly classed and ought NOT be mistakenly/inaccurately classed Booian Australians.

If it's agreeable to you, without changing any of the ABS statistics quoted in the stubs .. I'd like to amend the defintions to read something like this:

Booian(Nation) Australians are citizens of Australia who were born in Booian or otherwise qualify to be citizens of Booian

I suggest this kind of definition particularly for all articles dealing with 'nations', such as South Africa, and even China which are themselves, made up of a multitude of ethnic groups and identies!!

This kind of definition is not only more accurate .. but it also deals with the vagaries of multiple generations of ancestory (ie with ancestry doubling from 2, to 4, to 8, to 16, to 32 possible ancestoral claims .. and how far do we go back??).

I hope you agree and find the above suggested amendment agreeable?? Bruceanthro (talk) 06:48, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

  • Hi - it isn't that I don't hear you (or read you) my problem is being pedantic about reflecting the stats which we have to hand and we are using. I am also constrained a bit by the effect of common usage which is a bit broader but I note that born in Booian or otherwise qualify to be citizens of Booian is broader and a long way there.
Because the stats count residents and I want to use them I match the definition to what is being counted. Pause to gather thoughts There must be some way around this. I am happy to use the old stats on citizens from 1996 (which we discussed at [[Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Demographics of Australia/Archive 1#Citzenship vs Ethnicity|Citzenship vs Ethnicity ) but I want to use the more up to date 2006 census which doesn't seem to have tables matching the infor at [1] This is a more recent documetn[2] but note it refers to permanent residents rather than citizens.
I am not sure if you remember the case of Robert Jovicic, born in France to Serbian parents, lived in Australia since the age of 2 but did not gain citizenship and was deported to Serbia in 2004 and now (Feb 2008) granted permanent residency [3] [4] - he wouldn't fit the definition you gave but I think we would ordinarily count him as a Serbian Australian.
So - I would be delighted with any form of words you can come up with that allow the use of the census stats and allow for the ordinary understanding in relation to the case of Robert Jovicic (he wasn't the only one - I am sure there was someone deported back to Italy too) but not sure that we are quite there yet and I can't think of a better alternative myself :-) Matilda talk 07:22, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

Article on Australian people? Scope?

Currently we have no article on the Australian people - the blue link is a redirect to Australia. There are other people articles. However I note that say for Japanese people it has the dab header This article is about the ethnic group. For the group of people holding Japanese citizenship, see Demographics of Japan. Similarly English people has his article is about the English as an ethnic group and nation. For information on the population of England, see Demography of England. The article on Canadian people redirects to Demographics of Canada. I am not sure I find the organisation of the US demographics a useful model - see for example Template:Demographics of the United States - there is some good bits but some of it is not yet thought through I think. Should we. like the Canadians, redirect to the Demography of Australia article or is there an article on Australian people that has a different scope.? --Matilda talk 22:30, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! A very useful source which gives citizenship stats ...

Hi - when editing the Malaysian Australian article, I was checking the refs and proposing to check cites ... when one of them : 2914.0.55.002 2006 Census Ethnic Media Package: an excel download is very very useful. For each major group it gives citizenship, arrival years, ancestry responses, state of residence, ... I propose to cite as

  • "2914.0.55.002 2006 Census Ethnic Media Package" (Excel download). Census Dictionary, 2006 (cat.no 2901.0). Australian Bureau of Statistics. 2007-06-27. Retrieved 2008-07-14.  - ie <ref name = "Census Ethic Media Package">{{cite web|url = http://www.abs.gov.au/ausstats/subscriber.nsf/0/5618AB4511347DC2CA257306000D44C2/$File/2914055002_2006%20(Reissue).xls |format = Excel download| title = 2914.0.55.002 2006 Census Ethnic Media Package| date = 2007-06-27|accessdate = 2008-07-14|publisher = [[Australian Bureau of Statistics]]|work = Census Dictionary, 2006 (cat.no 2901.0)}}</ref>

Any suggestions as to better citation gratefully received. Regards Matilda talk 22:22, 13 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi - I have nominated Post war migrant arrivals, Australia (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) for WP:ACOTF but am seeking collaborators at any time - the article was effectively non-existent and needs lots of work and also ideas around structure --Matilda talk 23:00, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Another useful product to know about, available for download from the ABS - I just wrote a quick article on it so I can link it from an article I'm writing about WA electorates. If someone knows how to improve this rather quick effort at an article on it, I'd be most grateful. Thanks :) Orderinchaos 05:54, 6 August 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Demographics of Australia

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. -- Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:15, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

Thanks. -- Headbomb {???????????? - WP Physics} 09:04, 15 March, 2009 (UTC)

Dueling move requests at Latin Australian

There are two suggested moves for this article, "Latino Australian" and "Latin American Australian", and the two nominators and I (randomly) are the only voices being heard. The evidence that's been presented is extremely thin, so more voices familiar with the topic would be helpful. Ed Fitzgerald t / c 18:51, 9 June 2009 (UTC)

WP 1.0 bot announcement

This message is being sent to each WikiProject that participates in the WP 1.0 assessment system. On Saturday, January 23, 2010, the WP 1.0 bot will be upgraded. Your project does not need to take any action, but the appearance of your project's summary table will change. The upgrade will make many new, optional features available to all WikiProjects. Additional information is available at the WP 1.0 project homepage. -- Carl (CBM · talk) 03:12, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Demographics of Australia/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Demographics of Australia/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 01:06, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

Demographics of Australia articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Demographics of Australia articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (?) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

WikiProject cleanup listing

I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). See the tool's wiki page, this project's listing in one big table or by categories and the index of WikiProjects. Svick (talk) 21:19, 7 November 2010 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

WikiConfererence Australia 2015 - Save the date 3-5 October 2015

Our first Australian conference for Wikipedians/Wikimedians will be held 3-5 October 2015. Organised by Wikimedia Australia, there will be a 2-day conference (Saturday 3 October and Sunday 4 October) with an optional 3rd day (Monday 5 October) for specialist topics (unconference discussions, training sessions, etc). The venue is the State Library of Queensland in Brisbane. So put those dates in your diary! Note: Monday is a public holiday is some states but not others. Read about it here: WikiConference Australia 2015

As part of that page, there are now sections for you to:

  • indicate your interest in possibly attending the conference (this is not a binding commitment, of course)
  • add suggestions for topics to include in the conference: what you would like to hear/discuss (again, there is no commit to you presenting/organising that topic, although it's great if you are willing to do so), or indicate your enthusiasm for any existing topic on the list by adding a note of support underneath it

It would really help our planning if you could let us know about possible attendance and the kind of topics that would make you want to come. If you don't want to express your views on-wiki, please email me at kerry.raymond@wikimedia.org.au or committee@wikimedia.org.au

We are hoping to have travel subsidies available to assist active Australasian Wikipedians to attend the conference, although we are not currently in a position to provide details, but be assured we are doing everything we can to make it possible for active Australian Wikipedians to come to the conference. Kerry (talk) 00:18, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Folks, just letting you know we will not be proceeding with Wikiconference Australia 2015 originally proposed for 3-5 October 2015. Thanks to those of you who expressed your support. You are free to attend the football finals instead :-) Kerry (talk) 07:50, 3 July 2015 (UTC)
